The arrest of a Journalist and a Social Activist is Undemocratic.

A meeting was held today in Akashpuri Colony at the stance of PUCL in which prominent social activists and intellectuals of Allahabad participated. The arrest of a noted journalist and social activist Ms. Seema Azad and her husband Shri Vishwavijay was condemned as undemocratic and unconstitutional. It was unanimously resolved in the meeting that the manner in which the governments are suppressing the voice of those who raise the issues of human rights violations is a danger to democracy and is giving an indication of a new emergency.
Senior Advocate and National Vice-President of PUCL, Shri Ravi Kiran Jain who presided the meeting said that Seema Azad is holding the post of organizing secretary of the PUCL, UP Chapter, and is popularly known and is a respected person for her raising issues of human rights by writing articles and her peaceful activities. As a PUCL activist, she has been constantly raising her voice against human suppression and in favour of democratic values. She is also an editor of a magazine namely “DASTAK”. Her husband Vishwavijay also remained active since his student days in social and political field and remained associated with revolutionary student front. Dr. Banwarilal Sharma, Director of Azadi Bachao Andolan, said in the meeting that the manner in which the governments are taking away the basic rights and resources of the people is unprecedented and any person raising voice against such activities of the governments is being suppressed by dubbing him/her as Maoist and anti-national.
The convener of the People’s Union for Human Rights(PUHR) Advocate Satendra Singh described the arrest of Seema Azad and Vishwavijay as an extreme step of high handedness of the government and the police in the meeting. The manner in which these two persons were arrested, where there was no lady police and Vishwavijay was man handled shows that two respected persons were treated like criminals. Shri K.K. Pandey, editor of Samkalin Janmat, termed the whole episode as a police raj. Shri Anshu Malviya of Shehri Garib Sangharsh Morcha gave emphasis on the fact that unitedly the state atrocities and cruelties has to be fought tooth and nail.
It was unanimously demanded in the meeting that Seema Azad and Vishwavijay be released forthwith and the oppression of the state in the whole of the country in the name of Maoism should be stopped forthwith. The meeting also condemned all sorts of violence. In the meeting Lalji and Devendra were present on behalf of Human Rights Law Network, Kiran Mishra and Jitendra Maurya on behalf of Itihas Bodh Manch, Asrar Gandhi on behalf of Progressive Writers Association, Prof. R.C. Tripathi and Zafar Bakht on behalf of Jagrat Samaj, Dr. Padma Singh on behalf of Stri Adhikar Sangathan and famous Gandhiyan Dr. Suchet Goindi.
